What Makes a Pishwas

Historically the pishwas was a front-opening robe. A Lucknow example in the Victoria and Albert Museum, from around 1830 to 1840, has a fitted bodice and a skirt of 31 triangular panels. Today’s bridal versions keep that panelled flare. Some are closed down the front, and some are layered in two tiers. The more kalis, the bigger the swing.

Pishwas, Anarkali or Angrakha

  • Pishwas: floor length or close to it, often front-open, worn over a lehenga or sharara.
  • Anarkali: a closed kurta with a snug bodice that flares from the waist. The pishwas is often described as its ancestor.

Fabrics, Work and Events

Organza, net and tissue give a pishwas its float. Raw silk and jamawar suit heavier Baraat versions. Pakistani bridal press shows the pishwas at the Nikkah and over a lehenga for evening functions. What do I wear under a pishwas?

A lehenga gives the most volume, a sharara or gharara adds movement, and a churidar keeps the line slim. Check each product for its included pieces. A different bottom can be quoted where the design allows.

Is a pishwas suitable for a Nikkah?
