Choosing Pakistani bridal dresses function by function

Few brides wear one outfit for the whole wedding. The quickest way to shortlist is to decide which functions you are dressing for, then compare silhouettes within them. One well-chosen dress can often cover two functions, the Nikkah and the Walima for instance.

• Mehndi: warm, bright colours such as yellow, mustard, orange and green, as an angrakha frock, a lehenga choli or a farshi gharara. More options are in our Mehndi dresses.
• Nikkah: ivory, white, ice blue, baby pink or a deep red; choose full sleeves and a dupatta that covers the head if the ceremony calls for it.
• Baraat: the most formal function and the traditional home of red and maroon, as a lehenga choli, a bridal gown or a floor-length farshi lehenga. Compare our Baraat dresses.

Choosing a silhouette

A lehenga choli pairs a flared skirt with a choli and a dupatta, with a cancan layer underneath where the design needs volume. See all bridal lehengas. A peshwas is a long flared frock worn over a lehenga, giving more coverage. Gowns, and open gowns that show a lehenga beneath, run in one line from shoulder to hem. Ghararas are fitted to the knee before flaring, and the farshi cut spreads across the floor; compare them under bridal gharara.

Weight is worth checking if you will sit through a long ceremony. It varies with silhouette, fabric, flare and handwork, so check the individual product page for the approximate weight and pieces included.

White and ivory, red or pink

A white Pakistani wedding dress, or one in ivory or cream, is the usual choice for a Nikkah or Walima and works with gold, silver or rose gold embroidery. Reds, deep reds and maroons take gold best, often mixed with silver or rose gold for depth. Silver and rose gold keep the work soft on pink, ice blue and lilac. If you like a design but not its colour, ask for a colour change as a design change.

Fabric and handwork

Common fabrics for shirts and cholis include organza, tissue silk, net, chiffon and velvet; lehengas and ghararas may use tissue silk, American katan silk, organza, jamawar or brocade; dupattas may use organza, chiffon, net or silk. Handwork may combine dabka, zari, salma sitara, nakshi and kora with sequins and pearls, and may include zardozi, resham, cutdana, gota or mirror work.

Nothing is cut until you order. Pick a standard size or Custom Size and provide the required measurements as part of the order process. The dress is made to the measurements and specifications you confirm. We work in inches, with centimetres shown for reference in our size guide; between two sizes, take the larger.

Any bridal design can be ordered as a full custom design. Changes that add fabric, embroidery or work are priced and approved before work starts, and on request we send progress photos and close-up videos during production.

Mississauga, Toronto, Ottawa and the rest of Canada

Shadi Dress sells online only, so there is no showroom in Mississauga, Toronto or Ottawa. Each dress is made in Pakistan and couriered directly to your address, anywhere in Canada. Bridal delivery times are calendar days from the day after you order and include stitching and shipping:

Every dress shows its price in CAD, and you can sort the grid by price in either direction. Three things set the price: the silhouette, since farshi and long-trail styles need more fabric; the fabric itself; and how much of the dress is covered in handwork. Changes that add fabric, embroidery or work are priced before work starts. Payment is by PayPal, card or bank transfer.

Can I try a dress on in Mississauga or Toronto?

No. Shadi Dress is online only, with no showroom in Canada. Every bridal dress is stitched after you order, in a standard size or Custom Size. If you choose Custom Size, provide the required measurements as part of the order process; the size guide shows how to measure.

Can I cancel or return my order?

You can cancel within 24 hours of ordering for a full refund. A later cancellation is possible before dispatch, with 35% of the amount paid deducted. Because each dress is made for you, there are no returns or exchanges after delivery. Approved refunds go back to the payment method you used within up to 15 business days.
